Can we be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect?

Mt 5:43-48

Jesus said to his disciples:
“You have heard that it was said,
You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.
But I say to you, love your enemies,
and pray for those who persecute you,
that you may be children of your heavenly Father,
for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good,
and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.
For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have?
Do not the tax collectors do the same?
And if you greet your brothers and sisters only,
what is unusual about that?
Do not the pagans do the same?
So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Last night, while I sat in front of the Blessed Sacrament, I read today’s readings and this line stood out for me. As I gazed on our Lord, I wondered what this could mean. Surely, God knows we’re not perfect, and how can we be perfect, just as an act of will, as the sentence seems to command.
Then it occurred to me that everything in this passage speaks of what we should DO – Love, pray, greet.
Our society tend to think of LOVE as a feeling, but it is a verb, too. I remember when I was dating my husband and was contemplating being married and the insolubility of that vow. I realized that love is not only a feeling, but a choice.
I choose to love my husband for the rest of my life. Not only when he’s being romantic and life is good, but in the bad times, the rough spots, the times he drives me absolutely out of my mind. I may be frustrated with him. I may be annoyed at his behavior. I may be saddened when he lets me down, but through it all I will love him. I may not feel it at that moment, but I didn’t vow to love him only when the feeling was there. I said, “For better or worse, until death do us part.” I CHOOSE to love.
I think this passage says that we are to choose to love our enemies. Choose to forgive. Choose to do good and to pray. The feelings might not be there, but I see nothing in this passage that says you must feel love for someone who hates you.
I think because God is Love, when we choose to love, we are a step closer to the perfect we have been commanded to be.

More party stuff

Friday, March 2nd, 2007
Well, I’m embarassed. I’ve visited some of the other blogs that are participating in the Ultimate Blog Party, and boy are they more interesting than mine!
I guess if you are visiting from the party, I should introduce myself.
I’m a romance and fantasy author and stay-at-home Mom to two wonderful kids. The Girl is 17 and a junior in high school, on the bowling team and beautiful. The Boy is 4, in preschool and just a delight.
I’m a Pennsylvania girl living in Baton Rouge. My DH, to whom I will be married 20 years in April, is a computer programmer at LSU.
This blog is really just a place for me to write about whatever I feel like writing about. I discuss my weight loss journey, writing challenges, my crafts and my family.
I also try, from time to time, to discuss what God is doing in my life. I’m a devout Catholic and still on journey to become the woman I’m meant to me. It’s not an easy journey as I’m definitely a flawed character and often seem to take two steps backward for every step forward.
One thing I hope will happen in this party is that I’ll make some new friends. Since moving to Baton Rouge, I find myself a bit deficient in the friend area, so don’t be afraid to step forward and say hi!

What kind of perfume or cologne do you like to wear?

Perfume and cologne make my son and husband sneeze, but I love them. I wear whatever anyone gives me. Right now I have five or six bottles in my bathroom. My ultimate favorite is Charisma by Avon, a discontinued cologne, but I love it.
The Girl and her father came home at 1 am from the Justin concert last night and apparently had a nice time.
Not much to write about now. Talk to you all later.

Thursday 13 – things about today

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

1. I don’t feel like getting the cool template for this meme today!

2. It’s orange day at the preschool.

3. We’re under a tornado watch until 3:45 pm.

4. It was about 72 deg. F when I took the Boy to school this morning.

5. Thursdays are supposed to be my fun day, but I think I will clean the kitchen, even though it’s the Girl’s job.

6. She didn’t do it last night and won’t be able to do it tonight.

7. DH and the Girl are going into New Orleans tonight to see Justin Timberlake in concert.

8. I think I’ll run to Hobby Lobby and get yarn to knit a sweater. I’ve been doing socks for awhile and still have some for the Boy on the needles but I want to do something else.

9. I also want to work a little on the quilt I’m making for DH’s godson. I really want to get that off the sewing table so I can make up some of my stash.

10. I’m doing this meme today so someone will comment. I’ve been wondering lately if anyone is reading this.

11. My new critique partner sent me a lot of fun stuff to read and I’m so excited!

12. I’ve kept to my WW points for the past three days and I feel good.

13. 21 years ago today, DH and I met!!!
