Am I the biggest geek in the world?

Or just the oldest?

Today, the nearest library branch hosted Potterstock – a Wizard Rock concert featuring three Harry Potter inspired bands, the Moaning Myrtles, the Whomping Willows, and Justin Finch-Fletchley.

Now, the sad thing is that I used to have Wizard Rock music on my mp3 player, and, seriously, I’m in my…okay, I’m over 50!

When the Boy and I arrived, the median age of the other people in the room was somewhere near 13 years old! There were some older people there, but I wonder if these were just senior citizens who hang out at the library because it’s hot in Louisiana and air conditioned in the library. (So much so that the Boy and I were shivering.)

Anyway, as I listened to these bands (basically 4 people that make up 3 bands) sing some songs I was familiar with and some I wasn’t, I thought about my choice of music. At this very moment, I’m listening to a Serenity/Firefly inspired radio station on Live365.com (Can’t take the Sky, if you’re interested. And if you are, please tell me – I’m feeling a little lonely out here in the black.)

My daughter has told me I’m the biggest geek in the world because of my listening preferences, that I go a little fangirlish over The Bedlam Bards when they appear at Babelcon, a local scifi/fantasy con, and walk around the house singing obscure Firefly music.

Today kinda reinforced that for me.

I bought a Moaning Myrtles CD. I think I am truly a geek, and you know what? I’m okay with that.

Are romance novels ever considered derivative?

I read a fabulous post by SciFiChick today – A Small Rant about Fantasy Reviews.

Her point is that when fantasy novels are reviews they are almost invariably compared to someone else’s book and generally unfavorably. She asks if this happens in other genres.

I’ve never seen anything like this with romance novels. Has anyone else?

Busy summer has begun

Today is the first day of soccer camp for the Boy. For five days, he’ll be learning how to play soccer from 9-12. I’m expecting much fatigue from him today as he thought it would be fun to stay up and play V-smile in his room after we put him to bed.

Two days a week he still has language therapy. We’re in a battle with our insurance company about whether they should pay for this therapy or not. He has Central Auditory Processing Disorder and they say they only cover language therapy if it’s something he had and lost due to an injury or other traumatic thing. I guess if he never had complete language processing, that’s okay with them; he doesn’t need to have it.

I think a case can be made that we are trying to restore something that’s normal that he never had, and therefore it is a “restorative” therapy.

Anyway, that’s an ongoing thing.

I also signed him up with basketball at the Y. That’s one evening a week and supposedly games, but we haven’t gotten a schedule yet.

Next week and the week after he’ll take swimming lessons and VBS is the middle of July.

I guess he’ll be a busy boy, which will be good for him.

I need to go now but I’ll tell you about my experiences at the pool yesterday later. Tschues!
