What is your definition of a traditional marriage? Do you consider yours to be traditional or contemporary? – I think our marriage is fairly traditional in that I stay home with the kids and Beloved goes out to work. However, I’m not June Cleaver or Harriet Nelson by any stretch. No pearls in the daytime, no dress and apron to vacuum. Don’t even own an apron, although I like them and if my life ever calms down, I have a pattern to make a few.
What scriptures do you turn to (if any) when determining your role in your marriage? – When we got married, I knew that Beloved was going to go to graduate school for physics, so on our wedding program we had Ruth 1:16 printed on the front:
And Ruth said: “Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee; for whither thou goest, I will go, and where thou lodgest, I will lodge. Thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.
I think, for me, this sums up my “role” in this marriage. Due to whatever circumstances, and God’s plans, we have moved around a lot and lived around the country and around the world, and I never have said I wouldn’t go whenever I was presented with the move. I might not be happy about moving but I never have refused to go or asked him to change his mind.
In the sharing of duties in your home (childcare, work, house cleaning), are you and your husband satisfied with the way things get done? If not, how would you or he like it to change? - I think we are, although I know he would like me to write a bestseller and make millions of dollars so he could stay home and program and/or write.
