We’re doing Vacation Bible School at our church this week and as always, I am the Drama Leader. I get to ham it up and act totally loony all in the name of Jesus. I absolutely love it. Of course, I’m exhausted when I get home and this year I’ve taken a pain pill each day at lunch as by the time I come home my back, feet and hip are hurting.

Today we did the story of Elijah and the 450 prophets of Baal. I got to tell the kids that I wanted to sacrifice a bull but Father Tom wouldn’t let me. (Yesterday, which was about creation, I told them I wanted to set off explosions and have the ocean roll through the classroom but the principal said no.)

Anyway, at the beginning of my class, the kids meet me outside the room, and I do a little opening to get the ready for the presentation.

Today I asked if they could tell me a character they see on TV that they KNOW is Absolutely Fake. The notes used SpongeBob for instance.

I got Barbie and Iron Man and Spiderman and SpongeBob. My darling son said, “Doctor Who.” I love that my boy knows the Doctor isn’t real!

However, two of the junior helpers, who looked like they were in high school, turned to each other and said, “Who’s Doctor Who?”

That’s just so sad.

This morning, I went into the kitchen to make my usual morning smoothie and Noah was watching some TV, as school is out for summer and his friends hadn’t started ringing the doorbell and banging on the front door.

Me: Did you finish your breakfast?

Noah: Yes. Can I have some milk?

Me: Sure. Bring the dishes into the kitchen.

As he brought his plate in, I poured him a glass of milk. I took the plate.

Me: Here’s your milk.

He turned and walked back toward the living room, without the milk.

Me: Noah, here’s your milk.

He turned back to me and said:

“Oh, I thought you gave the Vashta Nerada the milk.”

Doctor Who invades Mass at our house.

…or was it, “A Timelord walks into a church…”

Anyway, if you have been on my Facebook page much or know much about me at all, you know that my family are Doctor Who fanatics.

And as much as we love the 900+ year old TimeLord (last of), sometimes there are more important things in life.

The Boy is going to be doing his first communion in May, and therefore, he needs to study the elements of the Mass.

This morning, while he ate his Cheerios, I was going over the elements of the Mass and the items the priest wears. He is having a little trouble but we’ll work on it.

At one point I asked him what a chasuble is. He calls it the priest’s “holy shirt” which is fine, if not totally correct and WON’T be on the test that way, but I asked him what color a chasuble is.

Me: Does the priest just get to wear whatever color he wants?

The Boy: No. It might be Advent or Day of the Dead or Ordinary Time.

Me: So he wears the color of the Liturgical season?

The Boy: Right and if it’s the day the Doctor is coming, then he wears Blue! ::giggles::

See, you didn’t know Doctor Who is everywhere, did you?

On another Doctor Who related Mass situation:

Last Sunday I was sick and couldn’t make it to church so The Girl sat with the Boy while Beloved sang in the choir. The kids sat in the cry room (which frankly is a mistake if you ever want to pay attention or teach your child that Mass is NOT a time for playing!) and at one point, the Boy was muttering, “So no jo ho po to ro so.” (Confused? See video and explanation will follow.) (I guess you have to click the links to see the videos. I don’t know why it won’t just have them embedded, but whatever. They’re funny. Watch. I’ll wait.)

Judoon

The Girl then turned to him and said, “Stop that.”

A moment later, he did it again.

The Girl: Stop being the Judoon.

The Boy: I’m not being the Judoon.

The Girl: Stop being the Doctor talking to the Judoon.

The Boy: ::giggles::

Doctor Who AND the Judoon

Life is fun at our house.

Recently, we got rid of cable and are doing all of our TV watching from DVDs, mostly from Netflix. This also gives me a chance to indulge in my love of the Lord of the Rings movies in all their glorious LENGTH, at my leisure.

The boy loves these movies, too, and I’m happy to share them with him, since the Girl has to be force to sit down and watch them. I think if she gave them a chance, she’d like them. They’re like her kind of thing, all fantasy and magic and stuff.

Anyway, yesterday both kids were sick with bad colds. The Boy doesn’t have school this week, so it’s not a big deal. Last night, while Beloved was at choir practice, I asked him if he wanted to watch Fellowship of the Ring again. (BTW, our copy of Return of the King is a mess because some little boy, when he was MUCH younger, got out all the DVDs and left them on the floor and walked on them! So, I’m going on ebay to get another copy.)

Anyway, we watched just long enough to get Frodo to Rivendell before the Girl remember some homework (she stayed home from college yesterday) that she needed to get done RIGHT NOW.

Now, if you remember these movies, there’s a scene when we first see Liv Tyler/Arwen. She comes out of the light toward Frodo who has been injured by a Nazgul blade.

My darling little boy said, “Mommy, you’re pretty just like she is.”

Aww.

This morning, I was telling Beloved over breakfast that the Boy thinks I’m as beautiful as Liv Tyler (which I sould LOVE to be!)

The Boy, eating his cereal, said, “Or Jackie Tyler.”

For the less geeky among you, Jackie Tyler is the mother of Rose Tyler:

a companion of Doctor Who #9 and #10, and arguably, Doctor Who’s true love.

To understand what a compliment this is, you have to know that the Boy rates all girls in his class (and, according to him ANY of them could be his girlfriend) according to Doctor Who companions.

These are the three he knows (besides Sarah Jane who has/had her own show and he doesn’t really think of her as a companion). These women are the basis for all girls – he often says things like “She’s beautiful like Rose,” in which case I know the girl is blond. He knows one black girl from his preschool class and “she’s beautiful like Martha.”

So, you see, while Jackie Tyler and Liv Tyler don’t actually look that much alike, it’s a big compliment for him to think I’m beautiful like these two women.

I’ll take it!
